Damn this was a though contest subject, being busy with work finally there was some luck last week and an option to go out for some shooting. Some colleagues are just like me external employees. Their contract wasn’t extended for another quarter next year. So, we had a goodbye dinner together with the team and we arranged it at a kart center near the office. I couldn’t drive those machines because of my back, but my colleagues had some fun while driving. I accepted the challenge to create some pictures. Boy would I have known the lightning was that terrible I would have thought twice before saying that I would do this.

The lightning available was only some fluorescent lighting here and there. So lucky I had been that smart and grabbed a strobe before I left home. So, I played around first with ISO 3200 at the pits entrance of the track. No luck at all… Just before the next session I asked if I could use the strobe without bothering them while driving. Next session I tried it with the strobe, but still no luck. On the top floor there was a little bit more lightning (top floor? Yes the track is running over multiple floors through the building). I arranged for the next session a spot next to the track on one of the upper floors. A little bit more available light and a better spot for following the karts sideways instead of riding towards me.

Last two race-sessions I placed my strobe at full power and kept the ISO high to create some movement with the help of the strobe lightning while tracking the karts with a longer shuttertime. Been a long time ago since I did use this technique, but it was fun to do again. Light is a photographers dream and nightmare! Sometimes you have to accept the available circumstances and make the best from it.
