Head of Schouwen
Last weekend my girlfriend and I went to the beach on another island of the province where I live. This part is at the island called Schouwen Duiveland. We went to an area called de Kop van Schouwen (translated it does mean head of Schouwen). Here we will find the largest forest of the province Zeeland. And this is also a Nature 2000 area. When you walk through the forest here you will hear the ocean sounds everywhere. Strange experience while walking through the woods. The nature area does not only have forest but the hilly landscape also sand dunes, sand drifts, valleys and dune meadows. The forest gives a lot of bird species a home and during spring and summer you will find a lot of colorful plants and flowers here.

Left from this area the waves from the North Sea will flow, and on your right the leaves from the trees will wave in the smooth winds coming from the sea. In the dunes you will find a colony of seagulls from approx. 7000 birds. Actually, life is everywhere because when you take your time and look closely you will also spot many deers.
Back in the old days, the head of Schouwen was part off the German defense line called the Atlantikwall. This was a line from approx. 2685 km build by the Germans during WWII following the coastline of Western-Europe. There was no industry of importance but the strategic position from the island was very important. You can still find those bunkers hidden in the forest and the dunes in this area. Actually these bunkers where hidden by a storm underneath the sand just after the war in 1948. In the year 2011 volunteers co-operated with the WO2GO foundation to restore the bunkers and open them for the public.

The day we were here for a walk, it was raining like cats and dogs. But it’s better to get out and get some movement than sit on the couch back at home. So, I grabbed my camera gear with me in the hope I would spot some people for the contest. Well we didn’t spot anyone, but I could shoot this great picture from my girlfriend wandering through the forest. Hope you will like it as much as I do. It is also the first picture from my girlfriend with her as the main subject I’m allowed to place here on the blockchain. Cool isn’t it?
The picture for the contest
Will join the contest again at amateur level.
@derangedvisions thanks for creating this wonderful contest. Keep up the good work! ??
